Recipes: Oriental Roast Chicken

We have a roast chicken recipe that is a huge hit with two of my boys but not the third one. My SIL and I discovered the other day that he’s a bit of a soy sauce boy – must be his Chinese heritage – so I decided to try this recipe from my Mum. Whenever she roasts chicken, this is how she does it…

I haven’t got a picture of it because, well, I burned it… Yeah, I wasn’t watching it when I was supposed to. My excuse was that I was busy getting G2 washed up. I will add the picture the next time I make it but I thought I would share the recipe anyway because it’s really easy and it was received with a very positive response from the boys – all three! Yay!

Roast soy chicken


  • 3 pieces of Chicken Maryland
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp thick soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce


  • Marinate chicken in sauce for a couple of hours.
  • Roast in 180 C oven for 40 minutes (give or take, it depends on how thick the Marylands are). Watch the heat because the sugars in the sauce caramelise and burn easily (yeah, I figured that out the hard way).
